Your utility account number ties your bill to your service address. We use it to enroll you in community solar and send credits to the right place. Here is where to find it and why it matters.
Where to find it on a paper bill
Look near the top of page one. The account number is usually close to your name and service address. It may be labeled “Account Number” or similar.
You can also check the payment stub at the bottom of the bill. The number often appears there so the utility can match your payment to the right account.
If you want a refresher on what each part of your bill means, read our guide, Your Electric Bill, Explained.
Find it in your online account
Sign in to your utility’s online account or app. Open Billing, Statements, or Account Profile. Look for “Account Number” near your service address.
If you can view or download a PDF statement, open it and check the first page. You can also scan the remittance section. Many utilities repeat the account number in both places.
If you manage more than one address, pick the right service address before you copy the number. Make sure you select the account that matches the home or business you want to enroll.
Why enrollment needs your account number
Community solar subscribers usually receive a credit on their electric bill for their share of the project’s production, even though the panels are off-site. Those credits must go to your exact utility account so they show on the right bill each month.
That is why we ask for the full account number from your bill, with every digit in the correct order. A missing or extra digit can cause delays. The utility will not apply credits to the wrong account.
You also need an electric account in your own name with a participating utility. Renters can join if the electric account is in their name.
Here is how enrollment with CSR works:
- Check your eligibility online. It takes about five minutes, and you do not upload anything. Start at Check your eligibility.
- A CSR representative calls you, usually within one business day.
- We match your household with a project that has room.
- You review the subscription agreement before you sign.
- After activation, credits begin to appear on your electric bill.
For more detail on how credits appear on your bill, see Your Electric Bill, Explained.
Make sure the names match
The name on your subscription should match the name on your utility account. Use the same spelling, middle initial, and any suffix, like Jr or Sr. For a business, use the legal name that appears on the bill.
If two people share one utility account, choose the person who is listed as the account holder on the bill. If you need to change the name on the utility account, contact your utility first and update the bill. Then enroll with the updated name.
Keep your account number private
Treat your account number like other private account details. Share it only with your verified enrollment representative.
To check a representative:
- Ask for their name, ID, and the company they work for.
- No one enrolling you in community solar should say they are from your utility.
- Never pay anyone to “hold” a spot or a discount.
- Read your agreement before you sign.
- You can call CSR at 612-760-6788 to confirm a representative works for CSR.
Do not post or text images of real bills in public groups. Avoid emailing a bill photo to anyone you have not verified.
What to do if you cannot find it
Try a different month’s bill. The account number stays the same across statements. Check both the top of page one and the payment stub.
Download the PDF version of your bill, if your utility offers it. Search the PDF for the word “Account.” If you still cannot locate it, contact your utility’s customer service and ask for the account number on your electric service.
If your landlord holds the electric account and utilities are included in rent, that account is not in your name. To subscribe, you need an electric account in your own name with a participating utility. Renters can join when the electric account is theirs.
Finding and sharing the exact account number helps credits reach the right bill without delays. Keep it handy and keep it private. If you have questions, we are here to help you get set up the right way, the first time.
